Holdway Family

This is a family name that no one knew of until I started my research. I have two Holdway sisters marrying into my Collett and Duncan families.

Generation No. 1

1.  HENRY2 HOLDWAY  (JOSEPH1) was born January 1820 in Basingstoke, and died 17 July 1891 in Jundla, India.  He married ANN MATILDA ROBERTSON 8 October 1850 in Meerut, India, daughter of CHARLES ROBERTSON and MARY NORMAN.

9 May 1840 - Embarked for Bengal on the Ship 'Malcolm'.

1860 - Discharged from the Army.

Discharge Papers state:

" BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR GENERAL OF INDIA IN COUNCIL.

This is to certify that the Bearer hereof Henry Holdway Late a Sergeant of the Stud Depot 41 years, 5 feet 11 3/4 inches high, Brown Hair, fresh Complexion, grey eyes, by trade a Labourer a Native of Basingstoke in the County of Hampshire and Kingdom of England Enlisted at Westminster on the Nineteenth day of March One thousand eight hundred and forty for unlimited service. Is hereby discharged from Her Majesty's Indian Military Forces being admitted to pension GO 20th January 1860 and having recieved a full, just and true account of all his Pay, Arrears of pay, Clothing and all other Demands from the time of his first enlisting into the Service to this present date, as appears by the reciept on the other side.

Character.  Very Good

Given under my hand at Fort William in Bengal, this nineteenth day of June One thousand eight hundred and sixty.

Burial records state cause of death as "Accidental drowning" and occupation as "Engine Driver East Indian Railway."  Burial performed by C.B. Westerhout, Railway Chaplain.  There are two family stories as to how Robert drowned.  One story says that he fell in whilst fishing and the other story has it that he fell in the river during a family picnic.
