Societies and Associations

There are many societies and associations that can be useful to anyone researching their family in British India. I've included details of just a few of these below.

British Association for Cemeteries In South Asia (BACSA)

Formed in October 1976. The Association is involved with many activities such as the setting up of local committees in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Sri Lanka, Malaysia etc to help maintain and repair European Cemeteries and the building up of a Records archive in the Oriental and India Office Collections at the British Library. There are also several other projects.

The Association has a newsletter called the "Chowkidar" distributed free to members twice a year. There are also many other publications of interest on subjects such as social history and cemeteries to name a couple.

Here is an example of the content of the "Chowkidar" from Volume 9 Number 4 Autumn 2001.

Families In British India Society (FIBIS)

FIBIS Website

Briefly the primary aim of the Society is to help individuals research their ancestors in India and associated countries such as Burma, those which are now Pakistan and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Persia and the Persian Gulf and the islands linked to India, for example Mauritius.

FIBIS has a journal which contains brief, non-academic articles; a list of members' interests; requests for help; exchanges of information; lists of publications and book reviews; advice on using archives, etc.

Meetings are held involving lectures on subjects relevant to Family History in India.

There is an information exchange service, where information can be passed on or be requested by other researchers. Much of this will be via the INDIA@Rootsweb site.

The annual subscription for membership is currently 10 GB Pounds for people living in the UK and Europe and 15 GB Pounds for people living abroad. Subscriptions should be sent to the Treasurer.

The Association was formed in 1948 and is open to all ranks as well as to those who served in the RAF and in the WRINS,

An annual newsletter is sent out to all members in early March. The annual subscription is 2.00 GB Pounds, payable at the time of the Re-union Luncheon. Send payment to:

The Re-union Luncheon is held on the third Saturday in October each year and the venue is the Victory Services Club in Seymour Street, London W2. A notice concerning this is sent out in early September.

The Association is also a member of the Indian Army Association and one or two of the functions organised by this Association are attended by some of our members -in particular the Wreath Laying Service at St. Paul's Cathedral on the first or second Wednesday in November when, among others, a wreath is laid at the plaque to the WAC(I).
