1.  LEWIS ANDREW1 COLLETT was born 1771, and died 10 December 1843 in Girgaum, Bombay, India.  He married (1) ANN MAJOR 7 September 1800 in Bombay, India.  He married (2) MARY REGINA 29 March 1812 in Surat, India.

Notes for LEWIS ANDREW COLLETT:

Arrived in India on 4th July 1792 aboard the ship "D. Montrose."

Lewis is listed in the list of Europeans in the "Bombay Calender and Almamac 1841" Part III, page 64. The entry just reads "Collett, Lewis A."

Occupation on his burial records is stated as "Inhabitant coach builder."

In the name of God Amen I Lewis Andrew Collett, European of Bombay being of perfect mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner and form as following That is to say first I humbly recommend my soul to the mercy of almighty God and request that my body be interred in the English Burying Ground without any unnecessary expence in the same grave or near as possible to the grave of my late daughter Caroline Antonia Mary Harrison and I further request that a plain tomb be erected to her memory and mine the expence of the said tomb to be paid out of the funds of my estate I will and direct that all my just debts be paid off and discharged as soon as may be after my decease I direct that all my household furniture, silverware, carriages and all moveable effects belonging to my estate at the time of my death with the three houses belonging to me situated at the Mogul Sorry Street at Surat and the house situated in Girgaum Bombay purchased by me from Mr. Conductor Thomas Cloke shall be sold by my executors hereinafter named as soon as possible after my death except such articles of household furniture and silverware as may be found necessary for the use of my wife Mary Ragina Collett and that the monies to arise there from together with the amount due to me from the Nawab of Sucheen and all sums of money which is or are now or shall or may hereafter become due to me I will and direct shall after payment of the legacies hereinafter given to my executors be placed out and invested and placed in the Bank of Western India in deposit notes at interest at four per centum per annum in the hands of my executors hereinafter named and that all the interest dividends and produce to arise there from and the interest dividends profit and produce to arise from all such Bengal Government promissory notes or shares in the Bank of Bombay and in the Bank of Western India as I may die possessed of and the interest dividends and profits of all such other investments in which I may have money at the time of my death shall be paid to my dear wife Mary Ragina Collett as the same may accrue due during her natural life for the support of  herself and my son Rodney William Collett And on the death of my said wife I give and bequeath to my son George Smith Collett five out of the fourteen shares held by me in the Bank of Bombay and to my son Daniel Fallon Collett I give and bequeath four of the said fourteen and I further give and bequeath to my said son Daniel Fallon Collett the sum of one thousand Company's Rupees the above mentioned shares and legacies to be made over and paid to my said two sons or to the personal representatives or representative of such of them as may have happened to depart this life before my said wife three months from the date of death of my said wife The remaining five of the said shares in the Bank of Bombay wife I give and bequeath to my son Rodney William Collett but in as much as he the said Rodney William Collett is affected with very defective vision and is rendered thereby almost incapable of earning his own livelihood I do direct that the said five shares shall remain in the names of my executors hereinafter named or in the name or names of such trustee or trustees as they may nominate and appoint to hold the same and hereby giving to them and the survivor or survivors of them power and authority to make such nomination and appointments The interest dividends profits and produce thereof only to be paid to him the said Rodney William Collett from the day of my wife's death until the death of my said son Rodney William Collett for his maintenance and support with full power to the said Rodney William Collett to dispose of the same five shares by his last will and testament in such manner as he may think fitting And I do hereby devise and bequeath unto my son Arnold Burrows Collett the sum of three thousand Company's Rupees to be paid to him or to his personal representatives in the event of his then being dead three months after the death of my said wife. I give and bequeath to my daughter Charlotte Antonia Atkinson wife of Mr. Hugh Atkinson the sum of three thousand Company's Rupees to be paid to her or to her personal representatives if she shall be then dead three months after the death of my said wife. I give and bequeath to my daughter Angelica Caroline Quinton the sum of five thousand Company's Rupees to be paid to her or to her personal representatives if she shall be then dead three months after the death of my said wife. And I further will and direct that the said sum of five thousand Company's Rupees

Shall be to and for her sole separate and particular use benefit and disposal and shall not be subject to the debts, control, engagements or intermeddling of her present or any future husband and her receipt shall be a sufficient discharge for the same not withstanding her coverture. I give and bequeath to my grandson John Robert Francis Harrison son of Mr. John Harrison a purser in the Indian Navy the sum of three thousand Company's Rupees and to my grandson Alexander Harrison another son of the said John Harrison the sum of one thousand Company's Rupees the said two sums to be paid to them on their attaining the age respectively of twenty-one years if my wife shall then have departed this life if not three months after her death, the interest on the said sum to accrue after the death of my said wife to be paid them with the principal on their attaining individually the age of twenty one years. I give and bequeath one thousand Company's Rupees to each of my undernamed eight grandchildren namely George Andrew Atkinson, Richard James Henry Atkinson, Charlotte Emily Atkinson, the two sons and daughter of Mr Hugh Atkinson first assistant to the Master Attendant, George Smith Collett, Ann Ragina Collett, Isabella Ursula Collett, son and daughters of Mr.George Smith Collett, Mary Ragina Collett and Elizabeth Rachel Collett daughters of Mr. Arnold Burrows Collett Melter of the Bombay Mint The amount of the eight abovementioned legacies bequeathed to my grandchildren namely George Andrew Atkinson, Richard James Henry Atkinson, Charlotte Emily Atkinson, George Smith Collett, Ann Ragina Collett, Isabella Ursula Collett, Mary Ragina Collett and Elizabeth Rachel Collett are to be placed in deposit notes of the bank of Western India at four per cent per annum three months after the death of my wife. The principal and interest accrued thereon to be paid to them when they attain the age of twenty one years and not before if my wife shall then have departed this life if not then three months after her death.

I give and bequeath my gold watch no. 1991 by John Kenebel with the gold chain and seal thereto attached to my son George Smith Collett to be delivered to him one month after my death. I give and bequeath my gold emerald ring to Mr Hugh Atkinson to be delivered to him one month after my death. And as to all the rest residue and remainder of my estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature kind or quality soever the same may be and not hereinbefore given bequeathed and disposed of after the full payment of the legacies bequeathed in this my last will and testament and after the death of my said wife I do hereby give to be equally divided between my four sons and two daughters namely George Smith Collett, Arnold Burrows Collett, Daniel Fallon Collett, Rodney William Collett, Charlotte Antonia Atkinson and Antonia Caroline Quinton to be equally divided three months after the death of my said wife.

In order to prevent any misconstruction of the above mentioned directions in this my last will and testament I desire it may be fully understood that from the day of my death until the death of my wife Mary Ragina Collett the whole and every part of the interest of all the funds with the dividends that may become due to my estate on account of the shares belonging to me of the Bank of Bombay and the Bank of Western India and the interest of the money or monies received on account of the sale of my four houses and moveable effects are to be paid to my said wife Mary Ragina Collett during her life for the support of herself and my son Rodney William Collett and I do hereby further declare that the house at Surat purchased from Mrs. Khatoon Johannes on the ninth day of December one thousand eight hundred and twenty two in my wife's name and the funds and money at present invested in the Honorable Company's Bengal four and five per cent Government loans in my wife's name amounting to four thousand Rupees are the sole property of my wife and not to be considered as part of my said estate to be disposed of in such manner as she may think fit either in her lifetime or by her last will and testament and I further will and direct that the dwelling house, bedrooms, godown cookroom, despence etc. built by me joining and near the tower in the compound of Mr. Hugh Atkinson's House Colaba erected by permission of the said Hugh Atkinson as per indenture duly signed and sealed by me and the said Hugh Atkinson on the fourth day of May one thousand eight hundred and forty shall be delivered over immediately after my death to my wife Mary Ragina Collett for her sole use and benefit until her death After her death the said dwelling house is to be delivered over to the said Hugh Atkinson as per agreement contained in the above mentioned indenture and I hereby nominate constitute and appoint Messieurs Henry Ingle of the Bombay Mint and Thomas Selby Clerk in the Military Auditor General's Office executors of this my last will and testament. I do give and bequeath unto each of them the said Henry Ingle and Thomas Selby the sum of six hundred Company's Rupees as a remuneration for their trouble in acting as executor to this my last will and testament, the same to be paid to them sic months after my decease but the same not to be paid or payable unless they do so act revoking all former wills and testaments at any time heretofore made by me in witness whereof I have at the bottom of the four first sheets of this my will (the whole whereof is contained in five sheets of paper) subscribed my name and to this fifth and last sheet set my hand and seal this twenty eighth day of October in the Year of Our Lord eighteen hundred and forty three.

Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Lewis Andrew Collett in the presence of us who in his presence, at his request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses the 28th day of October 1843.

The foregoing will of Lewis Andrew Collett was duly proved before the Supreme Court of Judicature at Bombay and Probate thereof granted in the usual form unto Henry Ingle and Thomas Selby respectively of Bombay, British inhabitants the executors therein nominated and appointed the said executors having taken the necessary oath in such case required

Mary Collett (daughter-in-law, wife of Arnold Burrowes Collett) -       1 clock, my messuage or dwelling house and premises situate in Surat to hold unto her and her heirs absolutely balance of proceeds from sale of pocession if not amounting to more than Rupees one thousand

George Smith Collett (son) - 1 small tortoiseshell snuff box

Margaret Regina Atkinson (Granddaughter) -        the sum of Rupees one thousand at present invested in four percent Government paper

Theresa Hykoop (sister) - the sum of Rupees one thousand at present invested in four percent Government paper

Remaining  household furniture, linen, china, books, cooking utensils and garden furniture to be sold and "...a sum of Rupees six hundred be paid to my daughter Caroline Antonia Atkinson for the payment of the wages due to my servants at the time of decease and in rewarding them for their services during my lifetime." 

If the sale of pocessions amounts to more than the sum of Rupees six hundred for the servants and Rupees one thousand for Mary Collett, then the balance be given to daughter Charlotte Antonia Atkinson "...to be appropriated to such charitable purposes as may seem expedient to her."
