born in 1847 in Peckham, Surrey, England. Orphaned 1857 along with sister Rebecca Jane and brothers: Alfred Francis
Maddocks and Charles Thomas Maddocks. Joined the Army (16th Lancers)
and went to India in 1864. He married Caroline Loader in Bangalore widow of Terrence McAnally or
McAnnally (16th Lancers, killed at Bangalore), one of fourteen children born in Bangalore to John William
Loader (13th Light Dragoons/15th Hussars/12th Lancers) and Hannah Waters (born 1824 Bangalore). Hannah
Waters the daughter of David Waters (13th Light Dragoons) and "Nancy". William George Maddocks
senior had at least nine children, the oldest child Alice Mary married (Merchant Navy) Captain George Masson
and stayed on; was widowed in Rangoon and married William Drake civil servant. The oldest son William
George Maddocks junior stayed on and joined the same regiment. Most of the family moved to England

Mendies (1775-1863), the author of Companion to Johnson's Dictionatry in Bengali and English and wonder if
he and William Carey ever met. Mendies book was printed on the Baptist Mission Press at Calcutta in at least 3 editions 1851,1856
and 1876. Several of John Mendies children died of smallpox during an epidemic at Serampore in 1832. Descendants of John Mendies

Company between 1825 and 1847 in northern India near the Himalayan Mountains. His title was secretary to the Viceroy of India.
He served under Lord Glenburugh and Viscount Harding. In 1846, he was located in Simla in the Himalyan Mountains in northern
India. John died 19 January 1847 in India on the Sobrane Battle Field near the Himalayan Mountains. He may be buried in the Christian cemetery in the city of Ferezopore in present day Pakistan. The Roman
Catholic last rites were administered upon death. He died of a respiratory ailment involving coughing. See CURTIS
