late 1700's onwards - Madras. GOTTLIEB & EMILIA
VAN SOMEREN were brother & sister, parents as yet unknown but of Dutch origin, both born in the
1790's, probably in Madras. GOTTLIEB was a merchant in Madras, married twice, first to LILLIAN/LYNDA/LYDIA
PASCAL and after her death to MARTHA AVENAL. There were children from both
marriages including, from the first marriage, MARY CRISP VAN SOMEREN who married Lutheran Missionary AUGUST
FRIEDRICH WOLFF in Madras in 1848 & WILLAM JUDSON VAN SOMEREN who married his first
cousin HARRIET TAYLOR in Madras in 1846 and LUCY PRISCILLA & HELENA ROWENA from his second
marriage to Martha Avenal. EMILIA married a missionary, Rev Joseph TAYLOR in about
1814 & had children who married into the following families in India the 1840's & 50's BIRDWOOD,
LECHMERE, FANNING, PRITCHARD, BRODIE & ADDIS,
including the youngest daughter, HARRIET, who married her first cousin, WILLIAM JUDSON VAN SOMEREN,
who became Surgeon General by the 1880's. I am interested in any connections with the descendants of GOTTFRIED
& EMILIA.

(St) VINCENT
|
My Great grandfather was a British Officer in the Indian Army. I do not know how many generations
lived in India before my grandfather as a child was re-patriated around the time of Independence. The surname might have been
corrupted from St Vincent to Vincent over the years. I would be very grateful of any information
enabling me to trace my roots. Thank you.
