1784 - 87. St. John's Church Located to the south of B.B.D. Bag, St. John's Church was
built by the grave of Job Charnock, the founder of Calcutta. It was constructed between 1784 - 87, at a cost
of 2 lakh rupees. Based on Greek architecture and designed by Lt. James Agg, the graceful Church is made
entirely of stone. It is the earliest example of British masonry in India. Apart from Charnock's grave, the
Church grounds also contain the graves of Charnock's daughters and that of Admiral Watson, the hero of the
1757 capture of Calcutta. Near the west wall is a replica of the Holwell Monument - originally erected at the site of the
Black Hole of Calcutta. Inside the church there are, among other things, the famous painting of The Last Supper by John Zoffany,
a marvellous stained glass window and memorial tablets of prominent citizens through the ages. The Sunday service is held
regularly at the church.

ANSTRUTHER
|
1866-1887 Bengal. My 7 G uncles & G aunt have never been able to identify their pat GF and that
some of their given names are also found in the Elliot/Minto family, i.e. Melgund, Gilbert
and Elliot. These Anstruthers do not seem to appear on IGI or 1881 census in Britain or India and no births are registered
in London where they grew up. There are various family explanations for the family's destitute circumstances including cheating
at cards/debt and a possible suicide by shooting whilst sitting on the loo. My uncle, Father Godfrey Anstruther
OP was a professional genealogist and failed to identify his GF. Please help me succeed!

ATKINSON
|
Bengal 1872 to 1947 and probably before. Researching the family of Robert George Donald ATKINSON. RGDA
was born in Calcutta in 1872 and died there in 1945. He was one of around 10 children of John ATKINSON and
was close to his brothers and sisters. RGDA married Margaret Elizabeth HENWOOD (nee BARTRAM)
in 1904. Apparently, three ATKINSON brothers married three BARTRAM sisters. RGDA's brother
Alexander Sydney ATKINSON married Ellen BARTRAM and Allen John supposedly married Carolyn
BARTRAM but I can find no record of this. Sisters married WARG, WEBER,
WEST (anecdotal). RGDA's son Terrence Clive was my father-in-law. I am keen to find details of arrival and
history in India + trace Terrence's cousins who I believe are in England but we have no contact details. Also researching
