If you are like me and have ancestors with unusual names (like KUHLMEY) that no one ever spells the same way twice, then seaching the IGI by batch numbers could prove more successful that by the usual search methods. "IGI" stands for International Genealogical Index. It is an index of baptisms, marriages and burials compiled by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from original records and microfilms. This is available to search online at their familysearch.com website. Batch numbers beginning with "C" are christenings and those beginning with "M" are marriages. They are normally taken from Parish Registers. If there are no letters at the beginning of the batch number then they have been submitted by a LDS member and are therefore not necessarily from Parish registers. The number given to the batch is just alotted by the LDS computer. It does not correspond with the OIOC shelfmark. How do I search by Batch Numbers? First go to the family search website by following the link below. Familysearch.com 1) Click on the "Search" tab at the top of the screen. 2) To the left of the screen you will see a list of databases to search. Click on "International Genealogical Index". 3) Click on the drop down arrow for "Region" and select "Asia" 4) Enter the Batch Number in the "Batch Number" box. 5) Do not enter anything in any other boxes or it won't work. 6) Click "Search" and you should get a list of names and dates of events that are on that batch number and are available on microfilm at the Oriental & India Office at the British Library, as well as at any LDS Family History Centre.
Batch Numbers for Bengal Presidency The only OIOC records that the LDS have put online at present are the following baptisms. This is only a small fraction of the OIOC Ecclesiastic Records and the LDS have not put all that they have online yet. Don't think that because you can't find what you are looking for on the familysearch website that it isn't at OIOC or that the LDS don't have a copy. It just might mean that they haven't got around to putting it online yet!
This list of batch numbers is now out of date and further batch numbers can now be found o the OIOC and LDS Microfilm Page of this website.
